Advent Reflections

This Advent season, the main truth that has been rolling around in my head is that Jesus came.

And not only that, but that his coming was not some after-thought, last-ditch effort, or impulse decision. No, this was the plan all along. The Incarnation is the mystery that was hidden for ages. God spoke again and again to His people against unfaithfulness and ignorance, displayed his good and changeless character faithfully, and at the right time He sent His Son.

The waiting is over. He came. He displayed His perfect love. He went all the way. There should be no doubt, no questioning or debating about His love, His character, His compassion or grace. He has displayed it time and time again, and His coming put to rest any questions we might have. I often lose sight of it, and I feel that restlessness in my heart, like I’m waiting for something big to happen or for all my problems to be solved. This is why I need Christmas. I need the reminder that He has come and He is here. He did not leave us on our own. He could have left us all to die in our sin, but He did not. He pursued us. He loved us first. He took the first step toward reconciling man back to Himself, by being born as a baby and dwelling among us. God has sent forth His Word, true and final and full of grace and truth.

I love this Christmas carol…may I never lose the wonder!
Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

With th’ angelic host proclaim,

“Christ is born in Bethlehem.”

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”
Christ, by highest heav’n adored:

Christ, the everlasting Lord;

Late in time behold him come,

Offspring of the virgin’s womb.

Veil’d in flesh, the Godhead see;

Hail, th’incarnate Deity:

Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,

Jesus, our Emmanuel!

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”
Hail! the heav’n born Prince of peace!

Hail! the Son of Righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings,

Risen with healing in his wings

Mild he lays his glory by,

Born that man no more may die:

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”
